We all know that steel pipe is a very important tool to establish the buildings, bridges and other pipeworks. But it is also dangerous. So there provides some safety tips when handling steel pipe work.
Before we acknowledge the safety tips of the steel and pipeworks, we should acquaint with the various kinds of them. Because there is different ways to handling, storage, and transporting with different forms of the steel pipe. The types of the steel pipe include the flat plate, coil, round and squared bars, beams, pipes, and many other shapes. We need some specific tools to deal with the steel pates and bars, such as chains, clamps, and hooks. We need ensure the property of storing those fittings, attachments, and implements which used for handling steel plates and bars for our safety. We also can’t slip and fall the equipment. The following will introduce some methods of protecting the employees when they construct or repair the buildings, bridges or other structures where steel erection occurs.
- The employees who use those dangerous equipment need have the basic ability required. If necessary, they should get corresponding certificate and gain enough safety knowledge.
- When the employees handling the steel pipe, they need wear the safety equipment, such as hard hats, steel toed boots and gloves.
- The equipment, such as cranes, forklifts, or hoists, which used to handle the steel pipe must be inspection qualified. The limitation and the load chart should be shown clearly in the surface.
- The lifting attachment must be load rated sufficient for the job.
- only one piece of steel can be lifted by the plate or dog clamps at one time.
- The chain would fail to work and cause the load to fall when it was installed improperly or using over its road rating.
- The road rating of the web slings should be ensure within its scope. And it can’t be contacted with the sharp edges.
- In order to prevent the road swinging on the floor or ground, the crane or hoist should be positioned directly over the load.
- Storing and transporting the steel pipe must be very careful, cause of there is some risks. If we don’t make any limits or fixation, the steel material may roll, slip, slid, or fall over. If the system of the storing space is not designed properly, the shelves or racking may breakdown. So, a professional designed inter-space is necessary for the steel material storage.
- In order to prevent the collapse, we must cross braced the racking or shelving systems.
- We should install the bollard posts in order to prevent the storage systems is been damaged by the forklifts or equipment.
- In the prominent locations of the system, the safe load capacity of storage systems should be clearly displayed.
- The weight of every kind of the steel pipes must be clearly knowledgeable by the employees.
- In order to promote the use of plate clamps, we should offset the steel plate stored on end or upright.
- If the round bar, pipe and steel coil are inclined or stopped, they should be stored in racks. If not, the material would rolling off.
- The storing of the large steel pipe is particularly. It should be stored lying flat and chocked, or secured in cradle in cradle racks. And we should use pipe cradles to transport these pipes.
- We must handle and store the coil steel properly. Because it is very dangerous and we would easy be injured by it. The coil steel is divided into different forms by the size and weight. Some may weight up to 15 tons. If the coil steel is uncoiled without restraint, it would be hazardous.
- Smaller coils should be put on the top, because the weight of the larger one would push apart it, then produce danger.
- Both the large diameter steel pipe and the coil steel should be transported in cradles.
Closing the gaps
- Steel is usually transported by the flatbed trucks and semi trailers. But what we should remarkable is that headboards should be provided in the trucks. It can protect the driver from the load moving forward. In addition, a trail board is also necessary. It can protect other drivers from loose material.
- In order to prevent the lateral movement of the load, the stanchion pins that suitable to the load should be placed in the rail post pockets.
- A special lane should be provided for the transportation of the steel pipe. As for the inside of the trucks, there should install a grab bucket between the cab and the headboard so that it can provide a safe vantage point for loading and unloading the operations directly. In order to ensure the safety of the load, drivers should check the load hourly.
- The rated load of the chains which used to fix the load and tied the steel pipe for transportation should be operated properly.
- Don’t park the trucks in an uneven ground to unload the cargo. If the destination is not suitable to unload the steel materials, the drive should inform the superiors to find another suitable place to load the steel pipes safely.
- The stanchion pins should be left in place and the binders should be loosen slowly while unloading the steels, especially the pipes and coil. Besides, it should be unloaded one by one. And it can’t be loosen completely until all the chains are loosing and there is no indication show that the load has transferred. Also, in order to prevent load shift hazard, the steel material should be re-tighten between the shifts while unloading.
Under any circumstances, when handling the steel, we should always be very carefully and slowly. With their different weight and the destructive capability, we should handle it in different methods. We should also notice that don’t neglect the safety to speed up the handling process. Remember forever that the safety is always the first priority.
With the development of industry, more and more pollution is appearing, especially the water pollution which is one of the biggest problems in today’s new life.
What Is Water Pollution
Water pollution is a kind of pollution that the groundwater is polluted by toxic chemicals and biological agents which exceed what is naturally found in the water, and the terrible thing is that this kind of pollution may pose a threat to human health and/or the environment. Besides, because of various human activities, chemicals introduced into the water bodies may be consist of the city water pollution. No matter what kind of harm those chemicals may pose to human health and the environment, they will pollute the water.
Causes Of Water Pollution
There are some examples of such chemicals, especially many of the chlorinated solvents commonly used in industry, which is polluting our waters just as the result of human activities. A gasoline oxygenate that is called MTBE (Methyl-tert-butyl-ether), which is another example currently banned in the U.S. Regardless of their provenance. No matter what kind of the chemicals or biological agents are, they are generically referred to as water pollutants due to cause water pollution.
It doesn’t matter whether water’s size is big or not, or where the location is, or any kind of it can become polluted. Not only lakes from remote areas but also huge water bodies can be polluted because of the air transportation of pollutant particles and their transfer into precipitation water. At some point, swimming pools, ponds, lakes, creeks, rivers, seas, and oceans which are the groundwater and surface water may all become polluted. If the water body is bigger, the time that required for naturally cleansing the pollution and recovery is shorter, just because the quick diffusion and dissipation of contamination and the faster natural degradation processes.
Types of Water Pollution
- Chemical — there are various chemicals causing the water pollution, and the most common water pollutants are as follow:
Crude oil and various petroleum products which are included gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, motor and lubricating oils, jet fuel. They are always sitting on top of water forming sheens of “free product” because these compounds are lighter than water. But, if there is a small amount of these compounds dissolve in water, it will be harmful and at the same time may remain unnoticeable by the eye.
Fertilizers which are included nitrates and phosphates. They can be used to life with a small amount, but if there are higher amounts of nitrates and phosphates in water can be beneficial to algae and harmful microorganisms instead of human and aquatic life, and at the same time, they cannot be seen themselves in water due to they do not form sheens or color the water. The fast and abundant water growth is the typical effect of water pollution by fertilizers though agricultural runoff.
Chlorinated solvents which are included TCE, PCE, 1,1,1-TCA, carbon tetrachloride, Freons. They are quite persistent and toxic when they sink in water. Because of this, these compounds are different form petroleum products that are easily seen as sheens on top of water surface, they cannot be seen by the eye.
Petroleum solvents which are included benzene, toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene.
Other organic solvents and chemicals are included acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, alcohols such as ethanol, isopropanol; or oxygenate compounds such as MTBE.
Antibiotics and other products which are pharmaceutical.
- Radiological — this is always the most comment water pollutant causes.
- Biological — if there are a lot of microorganisms such as bacterial species and viruses, worms, and algae in the water, they will be one of biggest the water pollution.
Sources of Water Pollution
The medical, industrial and household waste, chaotic agricultural fertilizers disposal and accidental oil spills are the main sources of water pollution, and they pollute the water to a large extent. There has been numerous research on the sources of water pollution which points back to human sources.
- A lot of infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, through sewage, human waste, and animal excreta, they pollute the water.
- Uranium, thorium, and radon are highly toxic materials which are consist in radioactive waste. Mining, power plants or natural sources are activities which pollute the water most, and some steel pipe suppliers won’t deal with these pipes with highly toxic materials.
- The chemical substances can be either organic such as pesticides, plastic, oil, detergents, etc. which is from domestic, industrial or agricultural waste, or inorganic such as acids, metals, salts which is from domestic and industrial effluents.
There are some examples of major water pollutants that affect the ecosystem:
- Plant nutrients can form various chemical fertilizers, sewage, and manure such as phosphates and nitrates
- Sewage and agricultural run-offs form oxygen-demanding manures and agricultural waste
- The heated waters that used in several industries and power plants, sediments that after soil erosion in the soil
How Does Water Pollution Affect Us
A large variety of diseases and a serious problem for human health may be caused by water pollution. We will get exposed to polluted water in various ways which is included but not necessarily limited to:
You may drink polluted water
You may bath or shower in polluted water
You may swim in polluted water
You may breathe the vapors of a polluted water
You may consume polluted food
You may consume meat from animals which are fed of the food polluted by water.
Diseases caused by Water Pollution
After exposure the effects of water pollution may appear immediately, in the case of drinking water, a high amount of pollutants will be more or less violent. Lower amounts of pollutants will appear some time after repetitive exposure to water. Drinking water which is polluted will cause from simple intoxication and stomach aches to deadly diseases or sudden death. So with the development of industry, more and more water pollution appear, especially the city water pollution. Some steel pipe suppliers can make some pipes which can help protect water from the pollution, and people can use and drink the clean water.
An estimated 240,000 water mains break each year. How these two things related? Steel pipe definitely the answer!
An estimated 240,000 water mains break each year. The nation’s pipes are in such bad shape, says the Environmental Protection Agency, that it will take $650 billion to repair them all.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports conclude that the costs to repair or replace pipes, equipment and structures deteriorated by H2S corrosion may exceed the cost several times over to control the corrosion and avoid infrastructure damage. Nationally, the cost to repair corrosion damage by H2S is in the billions of dollars, and many communities will spend millions of dollars in coming years to correct corrosion problems.
Corrosion caused by H2S?
H2S is an odorous, toxic gas. So why does H2S exist in the Wastewater steel pipes? In the absence of dissolved oxygen and in the presence of soluble biological oxygen demand, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and other sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) convert the sulfate to sulfide. Sulfate is biologically reduced to sulfide in the sewer biofilm, which accumulates on steel pipe walls and in wet wells. As wastewater is transported, sewage velocity, wastewater characteristics, detention time and temperature provide dissolved oxygen such that the concentrations of organic material and nutrients increase the rate of sulfide generation.
H2S corrosion can be caused by acid attacking which resulting from the biological conversion of H2S gas to sulfuric acid in the presence of moisture and direct chemical reaction with metals. this is the main cause of internal sewer corrosion.
Each year, there are many municipal workers’ deaths caused by exposure to H2S gas in confined spaces. Odor complaints result from neighbors living near wastewater systems who are exposed to low levels of the gas. Atmospheric H2S levels can be reduced by controlling the amount of dissolved sulfide available in the wastewater.
Corrosion of Wastewater Infrastructure cost much money but it is worth to do since we need restoring rivers to revitalize our cities. Water is important especially clean water! Urban river restoration – the process of using already existing resources to improve local ecologies and economiesis – is a growing trend in waterfront cities. “Returning the rapids to the Grand Rapids River is really quite exciting,” said Fred Keller of the River Restoration Committee. “There’s good indication there will be people willing to support that.”
Michigan’s Grand River
The Grand River is Michigan’s longest river, stretching 252 miles from Lake Michigan to Hillsdale County, in the center of the state. It’s been over a century since the Grand River, which snakes through the downtown of the northwestern Michigan city, had actual rapids. Last month, the river was one of 11 cities added to the Urban Waters Federal Partnership. It is an EPA program designed to restore urban waterways, support local businesses, increase recreation and protect Americans’ health.
Restoring the rapids to the Grand River will be an important catalyst for the continued revitalization of the region’s downtown, said by Former Mayor Heartwell. Unfortunately, Early estimates were restoration of the Grand River would cost about $30 million, however, it seems will cost more than that. Another important issue is that the project will impact people and activities all up and down the river, not just in downtown.
Grand Rapids Whitewater envisions the river without the man-made fish ladder or dams but with natural elements like boulders to create currents and promote kayaking, rafting, and fishing. Other enhancements would occur up and down the banks, all aimed at making the most out of the city’s most important natural asset. Restoring Rivers is a big, involved process that could take decades. As said before, it is a huge program that worth everything.
Many experts believe that is a smart way to develop cities in theory. It’s green space that can be used for recreation. And with the right zoning, small businesses dotted along the water. If each municipality is smart, they can get public schools involved in water sports in the spring and early fall. It’s really a three-pronged approach to development which not just some big gleaming office tower or outdoor mall but provide opportunities for retail, restaurants and the recreation economy.
Proponents of the Grand River restoration hope that it will, as Muller suggested, it will spur economic development downtown since it will bring tourists and increase the number of restaurants and bars in downtown Grand Rapids. Also it will bring much more jobs for the local people with good wages, even for those who may not have attended college or do have a degree and are struggling to find work in their field.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the city’s downtown development authority has raised over $100,000 and other private funders have backed it as well. But that’s well short of the proposed budget. Muller said the exact financing is still being worked out, but cited the area’s fervent philanthropy as a harbinger of success. He believed that a significant amount of money will come from foundations and private individuals. he said, “It’s really hard to say what this will be. It’s probably, maybe, a quarter federal and then a portion of maybe some state funds or grants and then the rest of it foundational support.”
